What is a Chamber of Commerce?

The Chamber of Commerce is an organization made up of the enthusiastic, progressive and forward planning citizens and businesses of the community who have combined their efforts, time and money to make their community a better place to live and make a living. The Chamber protects and expands the local community economy. The Chamber plans for the full development of every segment of community activity, coordinating through committee action, the orderly and planned progress of the community for the welfare of all.

Do you have time to interview an industrial prospect, prepare pertinent and statistical community data, answer inquiries about your community, survey recreational facilities, plan trade area good will trips or do a whole of other activities necessary to keep your community abreast and ahead of neighboring communities in our progressive age? Probably not, but by joining with your fellow businesses in a Chamber of Commerce you have a tool that can accomplish all of these things necessary for community development. Therefore the Chamber is actually a part of your business. Would you like to operate your business in a town without an active chamber? Wherever you see a progressive and growing community you will find an active Chamber of Commerce.

What is Essential for a Good Chamber of Commerce?

An Active and successful Chamber must have three things: an adequate budget, an active membership (not just members) but active members who are willing to work for the good of the community and a capable manager. The absence of one or more of these requirements reduces the success and activity of the Chamber effort.

Who Should Belong to the Chamber of Commerce?

Every business firm, business and professional person, in fact every citizen should support the local Chamber. Each business is successful because of its customers. The Chamber creates more customers for every business and professional firm in the community. The Chamber works for better highways, more recreational facilities, better community events, etc. which are enjoyed by every citizen.

Who Runs the Chamber of Commerce?

The membership runs the Chamber. They annually elect a Board of Directors who selects a slate of officers including the hiring of staff personnel. Committees made up of Chamber members are appointed to plan and work in the various fields of Chamber activity with the Chamber staff guiding and coordinating the efforts to accomplish the Chamber's program in line with policies established by the Board of Directors.

How Can I Make My Ideas Known to the Chamber of Commerce?

The Best way is to serve on a committee whose activities cover the field in which you are interested or arrange to attend a Chamber meeting and be included on the agenda to present your plans and ideas. The ideas are discussed and recommendations are made.

Why Shouldn't Every Firm Pay the Same Amount of Dues
 Regardless of Size?

Most Chambers have a minimum membership fee for voting and membership privileges. From this base, fees are increased on size of business, so each firm pays its own fair share.

What is My Chamber of Commerce Worth to Me?

Only you can answer this, but it has been established in seminars and institutes that it is worth the equivalent cost of a staff member's yearly salary!
