5th - 13th Annual Walk for Life - Arkansas Valley Pregnancy Center at the LJ City Park.  Registration starts at 9:00am

5th: Koshare Indian Dancers fund raiser at the LA JUNTA PIZZA HUT ( 402 East First Street ). Proceeds from all purchases on May 5 benefit the Koshare Indian Dancers trip to Japan in June 2007 and the walk starts at 10:00am.

6th: FREE DAY at the Museum. Famed Yucatan Mexico artist, Julio Cesar Castillo Rosado, will be featured during The Kiva Presents…  Artist of the Month series this May. Mr. Castillo will be on hand from 12:30 to 4:30 PM to speak with Museum patrons. He will also give an educational presentation to patrons and students about the cross cultural impact between the Mayan Indians and the Pueblo and Plains Indians. Mr. Castillo’s art work will be on display at the Koshare Indian Museum during the month of May. He was a recent featured artist at the Sangre de Cristo art center in Pueblo . Proceeds from the sale of his paintings benefit A Promise of Health, primary healthcare providers for the Mayan Indians

May 7 – September 5: Trails and Rails Trips

Narrated excursions aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief depart La Junta, Colorado on Mondays and Fridays for overnight trips to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Follow the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail up and over Raton Pass while learning the stories of people, plants and animals along the way. For more information, call (719) 383-5024.

11th- OJC Dance "A Student Choregrapher's Showcase 2007" at 7:00pm

12th: THE LADIES WHO LUNCH. A benefit luncheon and fashion show, with featured speakers and informative talks about fitness, skin care, financial planning, scrapbooking and more. This special day is to honor mothers and daughters, sisters and aunts. Catered by The Barista of La Junta. Reserved tickets are $25 for individuals and $40 for mother/daughter or two sisters attending together. Proceeds benefit the Koshare Indian Dancers trip to Japan . 12th- Elk's Lodge Kid's Fishing Derby held at La Junta City Park

June 9th & 10th: Living History Encampment

Visit the 1840s with teachers, students and living history volunteers and staff perfecting their 19th century skills. The encampment, which begins June 8, trains participants in presenting living history to the public. Event is open for public to view ongoing demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday, June 10 – 11. Pre-registration is required for the full encampment (participation is limited). For information, call (719) 383-5023.

The park’s main living history event moves from the summer to the fall, and this year celebrates the explorers who passed by the site of Bent’s Fort before, during and after the post’s existence. Camps from Pike to Long to Fremont will grace the site – joining the camps of Plains Tribes and Santa Fe traders.
